- REGULARLY CHECK FOR WINDOWS CRITICAL UPDATES. 

All the latest Microsoft Windows Operating Systems offers regular updates. These updates can be crucial for the proper operation and security of your system..... and they are FREE!

I can't express how important it can be to maintain these updates.

- Update your Virus and Spyware Definitions.  Maybe you have heard of spyware but don't know what it is?  Click this link & learn more from Microsoft about preventing spyware....    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/videos/Spyware6.html.  

Also... if your protection software is not updating automatically, you should visit your software manufacture website and follow their instructions for updates & downloads.

- Do a complete Virus & Spyware Scan.  Once you have the latest definitions loaded, put it to use!

- Backup important files.  If you have files that are important to you, make a backup copy on a CD, floppy disk, external Hard Drive, Zip Drive, or whatever you use.

ANY BACKUP COPY IS BETTER THAN NOTHING!.

- Update your Programs.  Check with your software vendor's websites for updates and fixes for regularly used programs. (Maybe now is also a good time to correctly uninstall programs that you never use?)

- Maintain your Hard Drive.  Use Windows built-in utilities to improve your PC performance. Although the latest, faster PCs don't see much of a performance boost, older PCs and hardware can greatly benefit in speed and increase Hard Drive space by using "Disk Clean-up" & "Disk Defragmenter" regularly.  These tools can usually be found in the "System Tools" folder. (click on START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS).
